A We successfully completed the second year of our fouryear Martens on the Move project, funded by The National
Lottery Heritage Fund. The project is increasing public
awareness of pine martens and pine marten conservation
and engaging communities to get involved.
Marten Map, which captures monitoring data from
volunteers, other organisations and record centres, as well
as incidental sightings from the public, is an accessible and
visual representation of the data gathered through the 昀椀rst
National Pine Marten Monitoring Programme. Launched
in November 2024, it had a full year of data during 2025,
which will help VWT monitor the spread and recovery of
pine martens across Britain and help to inform conservation
actions for pine martens. In addition, a total of 1,445 people
were involved in face-to-face engagement and training
events during 2025 as a key part of the project.
B VWT’s role as expert advisors and delivery contractors for
the Two Moors pine marten translocation project continued
in 2025 with 19 pine martens trapped in Scotland for a
successful translocation to Exmoor. Since the 昀椀rst Two Moors
translocation in 2024 to Dartmoor, there have been positive
breeding records and engagement with local communities.
C The European mink is now the most endangered small
carnivore in Europe and VWT has been working on a
Swedish Postcode Lottery funded project in partnership
with the Romanian Wilderness Society, Fauna & Flora,
and the Danube Delta National Institute for Research and
Development. This partnership has been looking at the
feasibility of restoring European mink to the southern
Carpathians using conservation translocations from the
Danube Delta, which is its last stronghold in Romania.
The project revealed, however, that the Danube Delta
population is more vulnerable than at 昀椀rst thought and
